The heavily promoted Yu-Gi-Oh plays like a mixture of Pokemon, Medabots, and Card Captor Sakura. Yugi, an aspiring champion at Dul Monster Cards, is coached by his kindly grandfather. The Cards are a tame version of an ancient Egyptian game involving real monsters: 5,000 years ago, a wise Pharaoh hid this magic in five Millennium Objects. Yugi defeats rich champion Kaiba, which brings him to the attention of Maximillion (sic) Pegasus, the owner of Industrial Illusions, the manufacturer of the Cards. Pegasus somehow steals the grandfather's soul, forcing Yugi to enter a tournament in the Dulist Kingdom. Unlike Pokemon, which emphasizes friendship and sportsmanship, Dul Card players gleefully cheat. Much of the show feels like an extended plug, and parents who buy the videos should be prepared for demands for cards and toys. (Unrated; suitable for ages 8 and older: mild monster vs. monster violence) --Charles Solomon

Times are hard in 1846 London and one must make do. So Nellie Lovett adds something extra to the meat pies she peddles on Fleet Street. The secret ingredient: freshly murdered victims of her partner in crime, barber Sweeney Todd. Composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim refashions a macabre tale into a musical masterwork in this dazzling performance of the 1979 Broadway hit originally staged by Harold Prince. In her Tony-winning role (one of eight the show earned, including Best Musical), Angela Lansbury plays Nellie. George Hearn turns his stage role of twisted Sweeney into an Emmy-winning triumph. The score coils around itself in ever-tightening spirals. The lines ripple with black humor and madness. Enter Sweeney's tonsorial parlor. Attend the tale.

Insanity is relative in the final installment of the Pink Panther series, starring "gifted comedian" (Variety) Roberto Benigni along with Panther alumni Herbert Lom, Burt Kwouk and Claudia Cardinale. Fuled by Benigni's "wacky charm" (Blockbuster Entertainment Guide) and "splendidly fractured English" (Halliwell's Film and Video Guide), Son of the Pink Panther proves that a family resemblance can sometimes be painfully obvious. An Arabian princess is kidnapped, and it's up to Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Lom) to save her. Fortunately, there's no Clouseau around to plagu him this time! But when a klutzy local cop with the unfortunate name of Jacqus (Benigni) is assigned to help him, he manages to run Dreyfus over and blow him upall on his first day on the job. Soon Dreyfus begins to fear that if Clouseau has a long-lost son, he would be a lot like this!

Eddie Murphy gives the "performances" of his career playing no less than seven roles in this uproarious Jekyll-and-Hyde comedy from Imagine Entertainment. Murphy stars as Dr. Sherman Klump, a kind, "calorically challenged" genetics professor who longs to shed his 400-pound frame in order to win the heart of beautiful Jada Pinkett. So, with one swig of his experimental fat-reducing serum, Sherman becomes "Buddy Love", a fast-talking, pumped-up, plumped-down Don Juan. When the Excel Saga animators meet, a caricature of director Sinichi Watanabe announces, "We're starting to run out of ideas and falling behind in production!" Koshi Rikdo, who supposedly drew the original Excelmanga, gives his permission to turn these episodes into examples of other genres. "Municipal Force Daitenzin," supposedly based on his earlier work, is a very funny send-up of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. "Visually Appealing Type" spoofs rock anime, complete with MTV video-style credits for the "songs" performed by sexy vocalist Key. The long-suffering Mr. Pedro struggles to win back his faithless but sexy wife, and even the hapless Menchi gets a special adventure. These parodies have nothing to do with Lord Il Palazzo's efforts to take over the city, but fans of Excel Saga know better than to expect logic or coherent story lines. (Rated 17 and older: violence, profanity; brief nudity, risqU and gross-out humor) --Charles Solomon

Let's leave aside the small problem of Krakatoa actually being west of Java. This 1969 epic adventure about treasure hunters who encounter the volcanic island just as it blows apart and who then get bounced around in the ensuing tidal wave is technically impressive if narratively lame. An interesting cast of familiar actors portray the mixed group of adventurers, but the script and dialogu are so weak one just wants to get past all their drama on the high seas (the group is seeking sunken fortunes on the ocean floor) and watch the geological fireworks. Fortunately, they make for quite a show. --Tom Keogh

The mind-boggling cast includes Maximilian Schell, Diane Baker, Brian Keith, Barbara Werle, John Leyton. This cast just make Krakatoa, East of Java the more astonishing!
Take the art direction and set design from The Crow and Batman. Add a male-bonding element reminiscent of The Killer or Hard-Boiled. Stir in a plot line about some top-secret near-invincible bionic-man superwarriors taking over the drug trade in Hong Kong, with only one man who can stop them. Season with a high body count, lots of explosions and running gun battles, and spectacular hand-to-hand fight sequnces. Top off with a soupCon of cheesy comic relief and a generous helping of atrocious dubbing. Bake for too long, then remove from oven and allow to cool until thoroughly stale. The result: Black Mask. Sure, it's a preposterous recipe (bet you didn't know that LED readouts will show up on an X-ray), but it's stylishly prepared and presented, with high-octane editing, wild camera angles, and a neo-Goth feel all around. Of course it's all about the remarkable Jet Li, the fight scenes, and the postindustrial art direction. Those who come expecting a high-concept, intelligent thriller will be left with indigestion, but Hong Kong action fans who live and die for insane stunts and head-spinning martial arts scenes will have their appetites sated by this dish. It's very interesting to see the influnce that John Woo's hand continus to have on American and HK action thrillers, years after his seminal films with Chow Yun-fat. It'll be even more interesting to see how films like Black Mask hold up in the future. Just don't take it too seriously and this movie works just fine. Oh, and the title? It comes from when Jet Li switches from his mild-mannered librarian persona to butt-kicking superhero, complete with mask and hat a la The Green Hornet's Cato. --Jerry Renshaw
